The marketing and development teams of the Big 3. The SUV was super cheap to make and insanely profitable at first, and they got hooked like a drug. Now that very marketing strategy has put them where they are today. Sure, they're making more energy efficient vehicles now (although GM is retarded with a capital R for killing the EV-1 program, and then destroying all the cars, idiots), their quality has improved slightly, but their product lines suck. The cars aren't attractive, and they don't perform well against the import counterparts. Not to mention GM has way too many brands. They need to kill off Buick. That branch makes nothing except elderly transport vehicles. And they're ugly to boot. With Chevrolet, Buick and Pontiac sharing many platforms with essentially cosmetic changes, they're competing against themselves. But to not bail them out would be devastation to the US economy, and perhaps the global economy on the whole. If they file for Chapter 11 (or chapter 7, I forget which is worse) then they don't have to pay suppliers. With the money owed to suppliers, many of them would close/file bankruptcy of their own that day or the next. That would fuck Ford and Chrysler and even some Honda, Nissan and Toyota plants. The suppliers would buckle and the chain reaction is catastrophic. Never mind the towns built around the factories and other suppliers. $25B out of the total $700B approved for those wall street fucks is nothing in the grand scheme of things. If GM can come up with a proposal showing how they'd effectively use that money to survive till 2010, then I'm 100% for it. In 2010, the UAW takes over the payment of retiree pensions and health benefits, a gigantic burden on GM. If not out of the bailout budget, then out of the money already alotted for making more fuel efficient vehicles. The point is, the money has to come from somewhere. If GM doesn't survive (and by survive, I mean not closing and not bankruptcy, because bankruptcy is certain death), then the Great Depression will look like a 1999 party in comparison to the economic future we'd experience.
